News 2011

9-11 September 2011, Cardiff: Welsh leg of 4 Nations Disability badminton Championships

Aftre much rehabiliation Gobi returned to play this torunament. Unfortunetely Erica was unable to make this tournament due to her recent leg amputation. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

Simon again met stiff competition and didn't manage to get through to the medals. However, Stuart managed to make the semi-finals in both the singles and men's doubles (with Martin) to gain his first two medals.

Gobi played with Fiona, a newcomer in the mixed doubles, and was knocked out by the champions Owen and Paula. However, he faired better in the men's doubles playing with Owen. In the singles Gobi has previously won, up until his operation, the singles class 3 wheelchair category 9 times in a row. After a tense first match against Martin where Gobi Lost 21-18, he came back to win the next two 21-8 and 21-13 to take his tenth singles title in a row.

Congratualtions to everyone who took part, especially Gobi who hasn't taken part in a tournament since November 2010. It's also great to hear that the competition is getting stronger and more people are taking part.

13-15 May 2011, Aylesbury: English leg of 4 Nations Disability badminton Championships

With the absence of Gobi, following his major operation it was down to our other players to fight for the medals this time. This was Simon's and Erica's first tournament. Unfortunately Simon just missed out on the semifinals.

Stuart made it through to the semi-finals of the men's doubles, with Martin who trains with us at our multisports session.

Erica however managed to win the ladies doubles with Paula Robinson.

Well done to them all.

We also found a new recruit for our junior club. Daniel was also playing in his first tournament in the Dwarf category.

Feb 2011 - The Olympic & Paralympic Values

Philip wins the Equality Award at the Welwyn-Hatfield Awards Evening.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are about much more than sporting excellence. Underpinning the Games is the philosophy of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the Modern Olympic Movement.

He saw in the Games an ideal opportunity to develop a set of universal principles – or Values – that could be applied to education and to society as a whole, as well as to sport itself.

These Values are:

▪ respect – fair play; knowing one’s own limits; and taking care of one’s health and the environment

▪ excellence – how to give the best of oneself, on the field of play or in life; taking part; and progressing according to one’s own objectives

▪ friendship – how, through sport, to understand each other despite any differences

The Paralympic Values are based on the history of the Paralympic Games and the tradition of fair play and honourable sports competition.

They are:

▪ courage

▪ determination

▪ inspiration

▪ equality.
